João Serra (Portugal)
4X is a collective exhibition that brings together artists whose themes deal with the representative and symbolic nature of architectural space.
João Serra’s photographic universe focuses on architecture as a subject for social discussion. His aims to reveal the implicit which is abandoned, excluded, or marginalized, which is so often hidden in the form of urban regeneration. His photographs are taken in peripheral, working class neighbourhoods of big cities, combining rigid lines, a legacy of structuralism, with a celebration of colour and sensation. In this exhibition, Dachas, João Serra documents the transfiguration of the industrial neighbourhoods of the Murmansk region, in Russia, when the workers created small summer houses, dachas, in the middle of an ugly, industrial landscape.
