José Bechara

Escultura gráfica
José Bechara (Brasil)

Throughout his career, the artist has been investigating the use of painting, sculpture and drawing as a means for a unique visual experience. For him, drawing has a dual function: it can be the final work in itself when it maintains its autonomy as a practice and a half, but it can also be «only» the outline of pictorial and sculptural projects. Thus, emerge drawing and sculpture productions in the series Casa from which the new work, shown at Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa and entitled Ultramar com nove cabeças derived from the serie Escultura Gráfica. Here, José Bechara breaks from his research in sculpture to build a spatial design made of solid lines in the form of geometric volumes - some hollow and others dense - clustered in apparent and willing harmony to occupy the space by filling it with color. Emerging from the thin lines that build this volume, the color permeates the visitor’s eye and forces them to go into the space. These small sculptures combine «filled solids and empty solids,» elements that multiply by constructing a geometric grid in real space as if «drawing» the void and bringing together the qualities of drawing. Escultura Gráfica is a piece that is open and closed at the same time in its deliberate use of sculpture with an organic line, like the Gothic and Baroque, which wanders through space while filling it. Again Bechara seeks to expand the field that is already expanded in his sculptures, drawings, paintings and installations.
